Saint Francis with Knit CapWho We Are
On one of my Saturday afternoon Winter walks not many months ago, I took this picture of a bronze statue of  Saint Francis.  This statue of our Santa Fe patron saint stands behind the City Hall building on Lincoln Street, not far from the Plaza, the center and the heart of our city..

At first I was struck by the humor of the normally hairless and hatless Saint as he stood silently and piously observing the little animals at his feet and the snow covered ground around him - with a knit hat on his head that was designed for a child and not for our glorious Saint Francis.

My initial reaction was that an obviously irreverent local had brought the hat to City Hall to share his own brand of humor with other locals.  And I laughed for several minutes, touched by the humor of it, convinced that even Francis himself would laugh with the rest of us.

It is said that Francis had a great sense of humor

I considered all the reasons for capping the Saint with a knit cap on a snowy day, including the obvious reason - somebody thought that the great Saint Francis might be cold.  And that made me smile.

Like my photo of our patron, my Santa Fe, the City of Holy Faith, is a mixture of the sacred and the secular, the very profound and the very profane.

And yes, its a home for those who own many hats and a home for those who own few or none.

To a great extent the reason for this site is to put a knit cap on Santa Fe - not only to keep her head warm  - but also to introduce you to the City of Holy Faith with all of its cultural, commercial, regional and spiritual diversity, to encourage you to visit or revisit it one day, and to provide a way for you to keep in touch with an old friend.

We wanted to let you discover the physical delights and the commercial side of this popular and major tourist destination.  That sophisticated side attracts visitors year round to Santa Fe and its surrounding communities.  But we also wanted you to discover the less obvious aspects of our city, many of which don't appear in the tour guides, some of which never, ever will..

Most travel related websites are supported by paid advertisers and prominent placement on the websites depends on the level of payment that the advertisers are willing to invest.

In order to give a lot more balanced view and to introduce you to the lesser known aspects of our community, we decided to build a site that included all potential advertisers without charge to any of them.

And we decided to build a site that was comprehensive, including those businesses and organizations who could afford to advertise on the Internet as well as those who could not - to include those who could pay to get your attention and those that would barely get noticed at all if dollars were the only criteria for inclusion on the site...

As well as spotlighting and listing businesses and attractions that have great appeal to our visitors, we have also spotlighted local organizations throughout the website who put hats on Saint Francis and provide assistance to others on a daily basis.

More and more of our non-profits and charities and cultural organizations depend on you as Federal and State subsidies dry up...

If you receive benefit from this site with all of its tourist resources, or if you are one of those resources who benefit from the free advertising, we encourage you to support these organizations in any way that strikes your fancy and your heart.

The City of Holy Faith is also known as the City Different.

In keeping with that name, we ask you to help put a hat on the head of our Patron Saint... you might just like being Different too.

The responsibility for this website and for its few strengths and its too numerous weaknesses, its blessings and its blasphemies, is solely that of a recent Santa Fe resident (since 1999).  He works in the local tourist industry and has been involved extensively in tourism here and in Florida since 1986.  He encourages you to visit and to enjoy our wonderful high desert community with its beautiful landscapes and beautiful people.

We offer a city of great diversity and talent and beauty - but we are not just a pretty face - we are the City Different.

We also encourage anyone who feels a similar desire to spotlight all aspects of this community to contact us.  We could use the support of the internet design community... and we envision this effort as a broader collaboration in the very near future... with your help and support, that will happen. The ill-suited designer and manager and organizer and implementer of this site is in his early 60's, but he welcomes the support of others whether they be 10 or 100... green hair or white hair or no hair at all, your help and your heart are welcomed.
